Job Description:
Skeena Gold + Silver is seeking an Assay Lab Superintendent to lead and manage all operations of the Assay Lab at the Eskay Creek Revitalization Project. Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, Operations, this position is responsible for supervising a team of technicians across multiple rotations, managing budgets, ensuring compliance with ISO 17025 standards, and maintaining a high-performance safety culture.
This role will also lead the relocation and expansion of the lab as site construction progresses, integrating new modules such as metallurgy, while overseeing staffing, training, and equipment commissioning.
Key Responsibilities:
Health & Safety
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across all Assay Lab operations
- Ensure compliance with Skeena’s health, safety, and environmental guidelines
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise a team of technicians across day and night shifts
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and professional development to staff
- Manage performance, resolve conflicts, and drive engagement
Quality & Compliance
- Act as Quality Manager for ISO 17025 certification
- Implement and maintain QA/QC systems, SOPs, and best practices
- Ensure adherence to ML/ARD management program requirements
Operational & Financial Management
- Develop, present, and manage the annual lab operating budget
- Manage procurement, consumables inventory, and financial controls
- Oversee equipment calibration, maintenance, and facility readiness (seasonal prep, daily checks, winterization)
Performance Monitoring & Reporting
- Establish and track KPIs, communicating results to management weekly
- Provide accurate and timely reporting on progress, safety, and operational issues
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with Exploration and Operations teams to prioritize samples and turnaround times
- Coordinate with third-party labs for off-site testing, reporting, and cost control
- Liaise with contractors, vendors, and regulators to ensure compliance and program success
Transition & Expansion
- Lead relocation and expansion of the Assay Lab as construction advances
- Plan staffing, equipment, and facility upgrades, including metallurgy wing integration
Other Duties
- Perform hands-on lab tasks when needed (sample prep, data review, final reporting)
- Support additional project requirements as reasonably assigned
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related discipline
- Familiarity with BC and federal regulations (WorkSafeBC, Mines Act, OH&S)
Experience & Skills:
- 10+ years’ experience in assay/analytical labs, with proven leadership in lab operations
- Expertise in Fire Assay, Wet Chemistry, ICP-OES, and Eltra C/S
- Strong knowledge of ISO 17025 standards and QA/QC practices
- Experience with lab software systems (LIMS, ELN, or similar)
- Skilled in lab equipment calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance
- Demonstrated success in building and sustaining safety-first workplace cultures
- Strong project management skills (budgets, timelines, staff development)
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills
- Highly self-motivated, organized, and able to work with minimal supervision
