Job Description:
Geotechnical Engineers play a critical role in ensuring the integrity, safety, and regulatory compliance of earth structures within active oil sands mining operations. Working under the direction of the Engineer of Record, you’ll provide on-site technical oversight, performance assurance, and engineering judgment across construction, monitoring, and reporting activities.
This is a fly-in/fly-out camp-based role at the Albian Oil Sands site near Fort McMurray, Alberta. Flights are provided from Calgary or Edmonton, along with meals and first-class camp accommodations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Acting as Construction Resident Engineer for earth structures within an active oil sands mine
- Conducting daily assurance-focused site inspections, including survey checks, fill placement verification, stakeholder engagement, and performance evaluations (approximately 50% field-based work)
- Preparing weekly and monthly as-built records and performance reports for earth structures
- Tracking earth structure underbuilds and placement rates, and coordinating follow-up actions with stakeholders
- Evaluating borrow material suitability for earth structure construction
- Supporting geology teams with pit wall mapping during mining operations
- Planning, implementing, and assessing geotechnical instrumentation programs for earth structures and pit-wall slope monitoring
- Contributing to Quality Management System (QMS) standards, procedures, and guidelines
- Supporting Annual Performance Review (APR) reports for submission to the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER)
